My Halloween Story. by Rod
I think my favorite Halloween was when I was a 9 year old boy living in Colombia.
Colombia was not a very safe country, so in the same way that people in Japan have a fence, or a wall around their houses. We had a wall around the whole neighborhood! 僕の一番好きなハロウィーンは南米のコロンビアで僕は9歳の時でした。コロンビアは安全な国ではなかったので日本の塀のように家の周りを囲んでいました。（何軒かの家を全体的に塀で囲んでいました。）
Well, because we had a big wall around the neighborhood, it was very safe for kids to walk around in the evenings. Most families on my street were American, or European, so of course we all celebrated Halloween!
There were many great, or Scary! Halloween decorations in people's front yards. Huge Jack-O-Lanterns, ghosts hanging from trees, pictures of witches by the windows. Scary, but fun.
このように僕たちの家の周りに塀があったために夜でも子供が歩けるほど安全でした。僕たちの通りの家族はみんなアメリカ人とヨーロッパの人々でした。ということで皆ハロウィーンを祝うのです。
近所の前庭には、大きな怖いハロウィーンの飾りがありました。大きなジャック・オー・ランターン、お化け、木の様々なハンギング（クリスマスツリーのオーナメントのような感じ）窓辺に飾られた魔女の写真、怖いけど楽しかった！！
That Halloween, my little brother and I - he was 5 years old, dressed up as super-heroes. I was Spider-Man and he was Batman!!
I had the cool red mask with the big eyes; only I couldn't shoot webs from my hands.
My brother looked just like Batman with his mask, costume, boots, and cape.
At about 6 o'clock, when the sky was getting just a little darker, we went outside and met our friends who were dressed up as heroes, ghosts, monsters, and princesses. We were a group of 8 kids. And we all carried little bags, or Jack-O-Lanterns.
その年のハロウィーンは5歳の弟と僕はスーパーヒーローにドレスアップしました。
僕はスパーダーマン、弟はバットマン。僕は格好いい赤いお面に大きな目を付けました。ただ手からくもの巣は出せませんでした。
僕の弟はバットマンそのものでした。お面・衣装・ブーツ・マント。6時ごろ空がほんの少し暗くなってから外に出て友達に会いました。友達といえば、ヒーロー・お化け・モンスターやプリンセスになりきっていました。8人の仲間でみんな小さな袋またはお化けかぼちゃを持っていました。
Then, we would stop at almost every house on our street, and the next street, and the next street and the next!! Until our bags were too full!! Full of candy, of course! At each house we would ring the doorbell and when the owner answered we would all shout 'Trick or Treat!!'
それから僕らはほとんど全ての家で立ち止まり、通りという通りの全てを網羅しバッグをパンパンに膨らませました。もちろんキャンディーで！！一軒一軒ドアベルをならし、家の人が出てくると”Trick or Treat!!”と叫ぶのです。
Of course, everyone knew it was Halloween so they had prepared lots of candy they bought at the supermarket! Sometimes they would tell us how cool, or how scary we looked.
I'll never forget that Halloween. Now, my son has his own Spider-Man and Batman costumes. Maybe if I put on a Spider-Man mask too, we could both go trick or treating!! But a grown-up wearing a mask sounds really scary!
もちろんみんなハロウィーンを知っているので前もってたくさんのキャンディーをスーパーで用意しています。時々誰かが、僕らがどんなに格好良くって怖く見えるのか褒めてくれます。この時のハロウィーンは忘れられないハロウィーンです。さて僕の息子は自分のスパイダーマンとバットマンコスチュームを持っています。多分、もし僕もスパイダーマンのお面をかぶったら、二人で”Trick or Treat.”で出かけることが出来るでしょう。でも大人がお面をかぶると本当に怖いからなあ・・
