運動会が延期になったね

This year saw many children's sports days postponed due to bad weather. Mostly the sports day is on Sunday but it had to be moved to a weekday. This meant that sometimes both parents couldn't attend because one of them had to work.

I heard a funny story about one school where a few dads took some time off in the middle of the day to attend their kid's sports day. They were doing the running race with the kids while wearing a suit and tie!

I've only been to one sports day in Japan, my wife's neice's kindergarten sports day. It was very fun and the games were really well planned.

It got me thinking about the differnces between sports days in various countries. When I was a kid in Australia we would have our sports day on a weekday and all regular classes were cancelled (we didn't have to make them up on another day). Parents usually didn't come to the sports day. The event was held on the football oval and we had four groups (also divided by the class). The groups were divided by family name and that was your group for your entire school life. Groups were named after Australian trees and each group assigned a colour. The four colours were red, blue, yellow and green. I was in the green group since my family name starts with "W".

Sports day was called the "athletics carnival" and teams did Olympic sports. These included high jump, long jump, discus, shot put, javellin, 100 metres race, relay race etc. I don't remember ever winning anything but it was fun to try!

I think sports day in Australia is different to Japan. What do you think?
